Whatcha Eatin' Wednesday?

GoOd MoRnIn' GiRlS!!!!!!

I hope you're having a fantastic hump day today.  So my fav discussion topic ever on this blog is the recipe swapping.  SO HORRAY for today!  Everybody, share what you've been eating lately for snacks & meals, share yummy new recipes  you've come across, share favorites, etc.

This morning I had the yummiest breakfast I've had in a really long time!  Hubby scrambled together egg whites, spinach, and sun-dried tomato crumbled feta.  The flavor combination was stellar!  I usually have 6 egg whites & he usually has 10-12 egg whites.  Yes, we go through a lot of eggs :)  But they're cheap & healthy, high in protein.  Only 17 calories per egg white.  And I've mentioned on here before, diff variations would be just toss in whatever cheese and whatever veggies you have on hand.  We like tomatoes & sliced mushrooms especially.

On Monday night I made this Chipotle-Glazed Chicken w/ Sweet Potatoes recipe for the first time and I'd give it 5 out of 5 stars for sure.  So delicious & the unusual flavor combinations I wasn't sure about ahead of time, but dang, they're great together!   I followed this recipe minus cilantro for garnish but I halved the chicken breasts: http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/recipes/quick-recipes/dinner/6-quick-chicken-recipes/

Something else I'd love to hear today is how you all prepare ahead of time to save time in meal planning and prep.  Shanda posted on here a long time ago about washing and cutting up all her fruit & veggies for snacks and meals Sunday night and putting them into little baggies/containers so she's all ready to grab a quick serving of them during the week.  I love that idea.

For me, I meal plan once a week (tonight's the night), and although it's a pain and takes at least an hour, I plan out what all our snacks & meals are going to be for the coming week.  Then I go to the grocery store to get all the stuff.  When I get home I dice up all the tomatoes & put them in a container in the fridge, wash the apples & remove the stickers, etc.  Wash the already-sliced mushrooms & put in fridge.  That saves time for making quick egg scrambles in the morning, or tossing stuff in salads.  Again, it takes time up front, but if it's the difference of healthy eating vs. non-healthy eating, I'll do it.  And it saves time during the week.

Something else I like to do to save time (granted, it's just me & hubby eating at our place) is make big dinners, then package up the leftovers into however many servings are supposed to be left and put those little serving-size containers in the fridge for lunches for the week.  Like Monday night I made this Chipotle chicken, and it was 6 servings, so we each had a serving that night, then I packaged up the remaining 4 helpings into 4 containers and we each had it for lunch yesterday and lunch today.

I also keep a box of reduced-fat triscuits in my desk drawer at work, so that in the morning at home I don't need to count out 7 crackers and put them in a ziploc bag to take to work.  Saves myself a minute or two in the morning.

I'm sure you all have fantastic ideas and I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear them all!  I'm always looking to save more time for the fun stuff of life :)

Tuesday Motivation

Good morning, girls!

It's our last week in this challenge!  I am so excited for all of you having seen progress, having gained confidence, and having re-ignited that burning drive to succeed inside of you!

For some, have your results slowed and that discourages you?  Has life been crazy to the point of pulling out your hair and finding motivation difficult?  Are you battling the winter blues?  Have you fallen off the wagon?  Let's all help bandage you up and get you on your way again!
(this picture cracked me up :) )

Check out these fun motiviational articles. Even if you're rocking this and you're not just on the wagon but you're driving the sexiest and fasted dang wagon in the world, these are still some good tips to keep motivation up:

Fallen off the Wagon? 4 Ways to Get Back on Track
  • Great!  "Gaining weight is a “problem” that can be fixed. So, I thought back to how I felt when I first began losing weight, and remembered the excitement and the high expectations of weight loss. Rekindling these feelings instantly motivated me to work hard toward my goal once again."
  • And as you all know from my little materialistic pick-me-ups: "One of the best ways to motivate myself is bribery. I buy a cute workout top or download a few songs onto my iPod, and suddenly my DVR seems a little less enticing. And if that’s what it takes to get back to the gym, I consider it a small splurge well spent!"
7 Things You Can Do Today to Get Back on Track with your Diet
  • I LOVE this suggestion: "When you have the time, take a moment to list all of the reasons *why* you are committed to a healthy lifestyle. Why do it at all?  Unless you know the *why*, you won't know the *how*. Any small difficulty will throw you off balance.  So your homework assignment is to list at least 25 benefits or reasons for eating well (however you define it at this point) and exercising. Then put this list in a place where you can see it!"
Dieting Setbacks: How to Get Back on Track After Regaining Weight
  • Of course we know gaining a pound or staying the same is not the end of the world.  Pay attention to those clothes and measurements- that's what really matters!  "Noticing weight gain on the scale, however, can mean a number of things and may not be due to overeating or falling off the band wagon. Regaining weight can be due to water retentions, muscle growth or your body adjusting to the diet and lifestyle change. Taking your body measurements and noticing how your clothes fit are often better indicators of progress than relying solely on the scale for verification of weight loss."
Just reading through all these articles and seeing that Google has a bajillion of them, I feel better already, knowing it's a common dilemna people face, just part of the healthy lifestyle attempts, and that I'm not alone or I'm not weak for having a low-motivation week (or two weeks).  I am normal.  I am more than normal- I rock :)  haha  I am pumped up and determined to make THIS WEEK AMAZING!  And I'm ok if I don't lose anything- it's the health, the energy, and the good body feelings that I'm going for.  I won't be so hard on myself.  I will be excited for every day that I've lived a healthy lifestyle b/c it's one more day that will be tacked onto the end of my life.

What are your thoughts?  How do you guys re-motivate yourselves?

Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal. ~Henry Ford

Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go. ~T.S. Eliot [This one makes me laugh when I think about my distance running...hahahaha]

The road leading to a goal does not separate you from the destination; it is essentially a part of it. ~Charles DeLint

Success isn't a result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire. ~Arnold H. Glasow

If you want to make your dreams come true, the first thing you have to do is wake up. ~J.M. Power

Life's problems wouldn't be called "hurdles" if there wasn't a way to get over them. ~Author Unknown

Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresea, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein. ~Life's Little Instruction Book, compiled by H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

It is never too late to be who you might have been. ~George Eliot

It is easier to go down a hill than up, but the view is best from the top. ~Arnold Bennett

The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It's your mind you have to convince. ~ Vince Lombardi

The world of achievement has always belonged to the optimist. ~ Harold Wilkins

When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn. ~ Harriet Beecher Stowe

Your body is the baggage you must carry through life. The more excess the baggage, the shorter the trip. ~ Arnold H. Glasgow

[The following are all from this site, but most don't have where they came from cited- sorry!]

Success is not a race, be patient.
Success leads to success.
Success is always a work in progress.
Success doesn't come to you--you go to it.
Success is a journey, not a destination. Focus on the process.
Some people dream about success... while others wake up and work hard at it.
Success is achieved and maintained by those who try-and keep trying.
Everyday is a good day to SUCCEED!
If at first you don't succeed-try, try again

When you get to a plateau, think of it as a landing on the stairway to your goal. And maintenance is a lifelong plateau, so a bit of "rehearsal" for maintenance isn't the worst thing in the world.

"Any experience can be transformed into something of value. Everything depends on the way you look at things. You cannot have the success without the failures.

What are stumbling blocks and defeat before you, can be stepping stones to victory if you remain determined.

In all your adversities there lies the seeds of equivalent advantages. In every defeat there is a lesson showing you how to win the next time.

I wake up every day with the realization that this is it, that there's only one shot at this life and I can either enjoy the ride and live it to its fullest and to my highest potential or I can stay the way I am.

Make the decision, then do something - no matter how small - toward accomplishing what you want.

Persevere and you will win the prize.

You get whatever you settle for.

Your past does not equal, nor does it dictate, your future.

One definition of insanity is: Doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.

Do you choose to simply know the path, or do you choose to walk it?

We fail because we don't strike the iron while it's hot. We don't take immediate action toward achieving what we want. We decide to wait until tomorrow, or next week, or even next month.

It comes down to a simple question: what do you want out of life, and what are you willing to do to get it?

Be specific in what you want, and use specific words. Empower yourself, and become the person you dream about

Listen closely: the only time it's too late to change yourself is when you're dead. Until then, you're simply making excuses or lying to yourself.

If you didn't need a pill to get fat, why would you need one to get unfat?

You won't fail if you're not perfect, you'll fail if you're not committed to improving yourself slightly each day.

Rather than aiming for being perfect, just aim to be little bit better today than you were yesterday.

We can reverse years of damage to our bodies by deciding to raise our standards for ourselves, then living differently. Old wounds heal, injuries repair, and the whole system improves with just a few changes in what we put into our bodies and how we move them.

"Anything is possible, It's your choice whether or not you choose to make IT happen."

What would you attempt, if you knew you could not fail?

Discipline is remembering what you want.

"You have failed only when you quit trying. Until then, you're still in the act of progression. So, never quit trying and you'll never be a failure.---Tommy Kelley

"If we defend our habits, we have no intentions of quitting them."

"When one approach is not working to reach the desired goal, that's not a reason to abandon the goal. Instead, it is time to devise another approach."------Ralph Marston

If you want what you do not have, you must do what you have not done.

Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels.

IT'S NOT ABOUT HOW GOOD YOU ARE BUT HOW BAD YOU WANT IT!!

Food for Thought: The starting point of all achievement is desire. Keep this constantly in mind. Strengthen Your Desire! Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat.

Your body keeps an accurate journal regardless of what you write down...

Every time you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask if you want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future. ~ Deepak Chopra ~

He who gets up one more time than he falls, makes it through...

Determination today leads to success tomorrow!

Quitting is NOT an option.

I can do this...I know I can. It's just going to take time & patience.
Start doing what's necessary, then do what's possible, and suddenly you'll be doing the impossible!

My life tomorrow will be the result of my attitudes and the choices I make today."

In this age, which believes that there is a short cut to everything, the greatest lesson to be learned is that the most difficult way is, in the long run, the easiest! --Henry Miller

My world is expanding as my butt is shrinking!

"Don't sacrifice your future for a momentary pleasure"

"Never give up on a dream just because of the length of time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway."

A year from now, you may wish you had started today- Robert Schuller

"If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got"

"Never trade what you want the most for what you want at the moment"

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.- Anatole France

Great changes may not happen right away, but with effort even the difficult may become easy.- Bill Blackma

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall" - Confucious

"The greatest thing you have is the 24 hours in front of you.
The past is gone; the future is distant.
Today you CAN succeed.
Set a goal you can achieve in the next 24 hours."

"The fishermen know the sea is dangerous and the storms are terrible, but they have never found a sufficient reason to remain on shore." Vincent Van Gogh

"Obstacles are what we see when we take our eyes off the goal." Rita Davenport

"The odds of hitting a target go up dramatically when you aim at it." Mal Pancoast

"Things that seem hard are not always that hard. Put one foot in front of the other, and you'll get to the end."

"Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your Destiny." Frank Outlaw

"If you've invested enough effort and energy to get discouraged, you're well on your way to success. Discouragement is a certain weigh station on the road to any worthwhile achievement.
If you know and care enough to be discouraged, you've made considerable progress. Learn what the discouragement has to teach you and then continue moving forward. It may seem as though you'll never make it, but in reality you're already there. Discouragement tempers and hardens you; it does not stop you.
Reflect on your discouragement and you'll discover that it is a result of your commitment. You've already invested your time, your effort, your life. Soon, you'll reap the full reward of that investment. Let discouragement spur you on.
Motivation is born of desire. The stronger the desire for something, the stronger the motivation.
Endeaver to keep the promises we make to ourselves... We deserve to be treated with the same love and respect that we would give to others....." (By CW on bootcamp buddies)

Climb The Mountain
I tried to climb the mountain today. As I inched my way up the path, I felt out of breath and had to turn back.
I tried to climb the mountain today. But, It was so hot outside, I thought I had better stay in my nice air-conditioned house and rest up for tomorrow's attempt.
I tried to climb the mountain today. On my journey, darkness started to fall and I was full of fear, so I had to return to a safe place.
I was ready to climb the mountain today. But I had so may other things to do, so instead of climbing the mountain I took care of the much more important tasks; I washed my car, mowed the grass and watched the big game. Today the mountain will have to wait.
I was going to climb the mountain today. But as I stared at the mountain in all it's majestic beauty, I knew I had no chance of making it to the top, so I figured why even begin trying.
I had forgotten about climbing the mountain today, until an old friend came by and asked what I was up to lately. I told him about all my plans to climb that mountain someday. I went on and on about how I was going to accomplish the task.
He stopped me and said, "I just got back from climbing that mountain. for the longest time I told myself I was going to try to climb it but never made any progress."
"I almost let the dream of making it to the top die. I came up with every excuse of why I could not make it up the mountain, but never once did I give myself a reason why I could. One day as I stared at the mountain and pondered, I realized that if I didn't make an attempt at this dream all my dreams would eventually die."
" The next morning, I started my climb. It was not easy, and at times I wanted to quit. But no matter what I faced, I placed one foot in front of the other, keeping a steady pace. When the wind tried to blow me over the edge, I kept walking. When the voices inside my head screamed, stop! I focused on my goal, never letting it out of sight. I kept moving forward. I could not quit because I knew I had come too far to stop now. Time and time again, I reassured myself that I was going to finish this journey. I struggled mightily to make it to the top, but I CLIMBED THE MOUNTAIN."
"I have to be going," my friend said. "Tomorrow is a new day to accomplish more dreams. By the way what are you going to do tomorrow?"
I looked at him, with intensity and confidence in my eyes, and said, "I HAVE A MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB."Author unknown

"When you name your fear you can face it. When you face it you can defeat it!" By CW on bootcamp buddies
"Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its troubles; it empties today of its strength." Author unknown

Someone will always be prettier.
They will always be smarter.
Their house will be bigger.
They will drive a better car.
Their children will do better in school.
And their husband will fix more things around the house.
So let it go,
and love you and your circumstances.
Think about it.
The prettiest woman in the world can have hell in her heart.
And the most highly favored
Woman on your job may be unable to have children.
And the richest woman you know,
she's got the car, the house, the clothes....might be lonely.
And the word says if "I have not Love, I am nothing."
So, again, love you.
Love who you are.
Look in the mirror in the morning and smile and say
"I am too blessed to be stressed and too anointed to be disappointed!"

"Winners make things happen. Losers let things happen."

"To the world you might be one person, but to one person you just might be the world".

"Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently" - Henry Ford

One sure way to avoid mistakes is to avoid taking action. But in the long run, avoiding action would be the biggest mistake of all, for nothing would ever get done.

If you're going to move forward, you're going to make some wrong turns along the way. Don't let that stop you from proceeding.

There will be many times when you'll look back and wish you had done things differently. Don't let that stop you from moving forward.

Mistakes are bad enough on their own. Don't be so afraid of them that you avoid life itself.

Every mistake you've ever made is now in the past. The way to move ahead is to leave them there.

Learn from where you went wrong, then step confidently and positively forward. For now is your time to live and to act. -Ralph Marston
"There is no fate that plans men's lives. Whatever comes to us, good or bad, is usually the result of our own action or lack of action."- Herbert N. Casson

What would you do right now if you knew that everything today would turn out perfectly? What project would you start, what person would you talk to, what problem would you tackle if you could be assured of success?  Is there anything you're putting off because you're afraid of failure? Is there anyone you're avoiding because you're afraid of what they would say or think?  There is no guarantee of success. But there is a guarantee that if you never go for it, you'll never have it. And even in the failed attempts, you'll learn and grow. There is no guarantee that other people will think highly of all you say and do. But that's their
problem.  Do you believe in the worth of your own pursuits? If so, then what could possibly prevent you from following them? If you're looking for a sure thing, then here's one -- everything you achieve will come
only from the things you attempt. In order to succeed, you must proceed. Today is a great day to start.

"Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent." - Marilyn Vos Savant

Momentum can be difficult to establish. And that's what makes it so valuable.
Because once you have it going in your favor, momentum can be hard to stop. With momentum on your side, small efforts can bring big results, and those big results can lead to even bigger ones.
Yes, momentum takes some effort and commitment to put into motion. And it is very much worth the trouble.
Take the time and make the effort to start something positive. Even though, in the short term, it would be easier and more comfortable to just do nothing, look past those immediate concerns.
Look ahead to that point where momentum kicks in, and consider the value of putting it to work in your favor. Then get up, get going, and get to work on building that momentum.
Start something positive, and create some valuable momentum. You'll be able to ride that momentum as far as you can imagine. - Ralph Marston

When you've eaten too much and you can't write it down,
And you feel like the biggest failure in town.
When you want to give up just because you gave in,
and forget all about being healthy and thin.
So What! You went over your points a bit,
It's your next move that counts...So don't you quit!
It's a moment of truth, it's an attitude change.
It's learning the skills to get back in your range.
It's telling yourself, "You've done great up till now.
You can take on this challenge and beat it somehow."
It's part of your journey toward reaching your goal.
You're still gonna make it, just stay in control.
To stumble and fall is not a disgrace,
If you summon the will to get back in the race.
But, often the strugglers, when loosing their grip,
Just throw in the towel and continue to slip.
And learn too late when the damage is done,
that the race wasn't over...they still could have won.
Lifestyle change can be awkward and slow,
but facing each challenge will help you grow.
Success is failure turned inside out,
the silver tint in a cloud of doubt.
When you're pushing to the brink, just refuse to submit,
If you bite it, you write it....But don't you quit!

Only One Pound
Hello, do you know me?
If you don't, you should. I'm a pound of fat,
And I'm the HAPPIEST pound of fat that you would ever want to meet.
Want to know why?
It's because no one ever wants to lose me;
I'm ONLY ONE POUND, just a pound!
Everyone wants to lose three pounds, five pounds, or fifteen pounds, but never only one.
So I just stick around and happily keep you fat.
Then I add to myself, ever so slyly, so that you never seem to notice it.
That is, until I've grown to ten, twenty, thirty or even more pounds in weight.
Yes, it's fun being ONLY ONE POUND OF FAT, left to do as I please.
So, when you weigh in, keep right on saying, "Oh, I only lost one pound."
For you see, if you do this, you'll encourage others to keep me around because they'll think I'm not worth losing.
And, I love being around you - your arms, your legs, your chin, your hips and every part of you.
Happy Days!!!
After all, I'm ONLY ONE POUND OF FAT!!!

AND IMAGINE
Recall the things that have held you back. And imagine how you now
can get beyond them.
Think of the problems that have frustrated you so. And imagine how
you can now rise above them.
Look at how far you've come. And imagine how far you can now go.
Think of all that you've learned. And imagine what you can now do
with that knowledge.
Consider all you've done in the past year. And imagine what you'll
now be able to do.
You're now in a better position than ever to imagine the very best.
And what you can imagine will lead to what you can be.

Feel the Burn Thursday

Good morning, gristle-busting girls!

What wonderful workouts are on the schedule for this week?  Let us know what you've been doing!

Protein before and after a workout is important. It helps to If you do like using some kind of protein powder, any kind, then check out this cool link of 70 protein shake recipes!  Some of them could be very very high carb/calorie, but nonetheless, reading through them should give you some fun new ideas!  Here's another link to 76 protein shakes, and I'm definitely going to try the banana bread one since I have some bran flakes on hand to use up.

Why worry about protein after a workout?  As this article explains, "Studies show that carbohydrates combined with a little protein creates a better muscle refueling and building response, and it reduces cortisol, a hormone that breaks down muscle."  I have also been told that when doing runs or endurance sports, I need to be sure to have protein mixed with carbs within 30 minutes of when I'm done.  For me, I like having a protein shake w/ OJ or a protein shake w/ some kind of berry-banana-milk mixture.  You could also go the route of buying expensive recovery drink products from GNC, etc.  We have something called "Dark Matter" that is pretty yummy and I like it after a long run.  It's a combination of protein & carbs w/ some other goodies mixed in to help your muscles recover quicker.  But of course, you can get in a good dose of protein & carbs w/ good old food right after a workout, too.  A serving of chocolate milk does the job pretty phenomenally, too :)  This will help you bounce back quicker after a hard workout and will decrease soreness.

What wonderful workouts are on the schedule for this week? Let us know what you've been doing!

Whatcha Eatin' Wednesday?

Good Morning, Healthy Ladies!!!!

Thanks for all your great tips & tricks on yesterday's post.  I hope we're all ready to finish this last week and a half of the challenge out stronger than even the first week and a half!  I know we can do it :)

So, whatcha eatin', girls?  A beloved and dear stalker of this blog posed this question to me recently, "Have you ever on the blog just asked people to run down what they ate the entire day?"  I believe she was trying to get at all of us sharing everything we eat to offer ideas for those who have no idea what to eat.  I told her about the ability to click on the left sidebar of the blog on the word Recipes in the topic cloud and that it will then pull up every Wednesday post where we talk about food, snacks, and recipe ideas.  But today, can you girls post what you ate any given day from first thing in the morning to last thing at night?  Just consider it Healthy Eating 101 :)  I think it will give us all great ideas.  And of course, share yummy new recipes, too :)  And if something's particularly a big hit with your entire family at home for dinner, those recipes are more valuable than gold to us all!

Last night I tried a new recipe from the P90X nutrition book, Pear Granola Muffins.  Baked 10 last night and had one for breakfast this morning w/ a greek yogurt. YUMMY!  Super moist, lots and lots of flavor, no need for butter spread on it.  Highly recommend it!  (if you click on it, it will get bigger)

Tuesday Motivation

Good morning, lovelies!
I am majorly impressed at all the momentum going on in this, the 5th week of the challenge!  Your successes are phenomenal :)  Great job, everyone!  Every little fraction of a pound and every sixteenth of an inch moves you one little step closer to your goals of revealing the real you from within!
Today's post is going to be by Sarah, to Sarah, and for Sarah :)  But maybe some of you will gleam a tiny morsel of insight from it, too... hehe

When things are going great for me mentally, emotionally, at home, at work, the whole shebang, I am stellar with an iron will for working out and eating healthy.  But toss a really rotten, stressful, good-for-nothing, universe-against-me kind of day in the mix, and then the torturous "who the heck cares" rationales creep into my mind and bad decision follows bad decision.  I know this.  And that makes it more annoying.  I know what I'm doing, I know I'm trying to find comfort in foods that are bad for me, but either don't care or I don't know what else to do.  I'm sure you've all experienced this at some point or other; I can't be alone in this boat.  Perhaps your downfall is the weekend- when peer pressure or when the "I deserve it because my weigh-in was so good" rationale creep into your mind?  Whatever the reason is or the rationale you tell yourself, emotional eating is simply eating for a reason other than hunger
Here's a good article that explains what emotional eating is, but most importantly, how to start overcoming it (other than spending a lot on a therapist :P )  And here's my tactic!  "Identify any healthy coping skills you use in response to the triggers. Maybe you don't use food for comfort all the time. How could you begin to use the healthy coping skills you practice more often?"
Shopping does the trick for me.  Ok, now I know you could argue that shopping is just as bad, moving one vice to a different location and bam, another vice, but still, if it's not putting cheesy food in my mouth, then it's good by my book.  Next time I feel overwhelmed, I am going to swing by Marshall's and see if I can find a cute workout top (I'm not letting myself buy expensive clothes or non-workout clothes at this point in my journey).  Then I'll feel motivated to workout to relieve the stress!  And luckily working out does relieve the stress, but getting from an angry mood to a pumped up and ready to workout mood is hard, and so this little tactic of mine has helped and will help me get in the mood to workout.  And be way cute, which is important :)  hahaha   I only get this all-consuming emotional need that needs feeding perhaps once a month or every other month (just so happened to be with lunchtime yesterday), which is lucky for me I guess; I am grateful I don't have it more often than that.  Other healthy coping skills that work for me are snuggling up with a good book or taking a little nap.
Have any of you dealt with emotional eating?  Have you found a way to substitute a healthier coping mechanism?  How did you recognize it was in fact emotional eating and not hunger?  How do you keep those moods at bay in the first place?
I can't wait to hear all your great ideas :)  You girls will never know how much you help me, and well, all of us help each other, actually.  Love you all!!!!!!

Feel Good Friday

Good morning, girls!
This message comes from Dale Smith Thomas, though she admits she has no idea who wrote it or where it's from unfortunately.  I thought of you all when I read it!  I highlighted my favorite parts that I thought really are focused just towards us and what we're trying to do in this challenge- fight those excuses!  I'd love to hear what you all think of it.  Please share a challenge that you've faced either during this 10 in 6 or in your "old" life that you thought at the time was all-consuming but that you've since figured out a way around it that made you able to thrive and hit your goals:

Embracing The Unexpected

"The weather is the weather. The traffic is the traffic. The more we embrace and allow the "unexpected" to be the norm, the less we're thrown off when things don't meet our expectations. Of course weather and traffic are simply two of the minor irritations and unpredictability’s we face in a given day. But if you're going to shift your attitude to embrace the unexpected, they're just as good as anything to help you do that.

Try an experiment this week. When you find yourself fighting a situation (start small with things like the weather and traffic), simply allow yourself to welcome the unexpected. Find a way to be at peace in the situation, whether the wind is blowing in May, you're stuck in traffic or you're in the slow lane at the bank or grocery store. Take a deep breath, open your eyes, and give up expecting the situation to be as you think it should be. Instead, allow it to be as it is.

Done consistently, this welcoming of the unexpected, allowing things to be as they are, transforms the relationship between you and the present moment. Coming from this more relaxed and peaceful perspective, you suddenly begin to enjoy the late spring windstorm. Being stuck in traffic and not fighting it, you're now present enough to notice the beauty of the mountains or the flowers blooming in someone's yard. And amazingly the "emotional plaque" that builds up from angsting over things that are out of your control begins to melt away

Challenges and facing the unexpected truly are opportunities. Opportunities to grow and learn, to strengthen ourselves, to test ourselves and our faith. They reveal how badly we want to create the dreams in our hearts, and how hard we're willing to work for them. This is such a blessing. It may not seem that way at first, but with a tiny shift in attitude, we can see that we have been handed an incredible opportunity.

The next time life hands you a challenge, stop and consider for a moment what it means. Is the universe saying "no," or "I want you to try harder?" Don't look at challenges as an end, look at them as a door leading to your heart's desires. That door might be locked, but you have the key. Maybe you forgot where you put the key, or you forgot that you even had it to begin with. It might take some effort and patience to find it again -- or you might even have to create a new one, but believe that you will, even if you're not sure how yet.

We should all learn it's not important to have all the answers right now. When challenges rise up before us, we may not know how to get around them, or through them. It might seem hopeless at first. Challenges can seem so overwhelming when we don't have a solution. However, life itself is very much like this too. Sometimes life is akin to bumping around in a dark room, trying to find the light switch. It is possible to get through the room without finding the light switch immediately; we just need to step slowly and carefully. Moment to moment, we find our way.

Rather than giving up when obstacles appear in your path, look at them as welcome challenges. The biggest challenge is choosing your own attitude. Will you get flustered and angry, or will you get excited and determined? Will you lay down and cry, or will you roll up your sleeves and get to work? Some of us take on a victim mentality when obstacles arise, and I can see why this happens. It does feel like the universe is picking on us, doesn't it? :-) I think we've all been there!

Why not change your mindset and think of obstacles as a personal challenge? Rather than feeling like the universe is picking on you, challenge yourself to figure out a solution. Say to yourself, "Okay, such and such has happened, now what am I going to do about it?" Put your problem-solving skills to work.

Once we begin to change our attitude about obstacles and challenges, they can actually become fun. Our competitive human nature rises up and gets ready to win, no matter what. We develop a steely determination to NOT be beaten."

Whatcha Eatin' Wednesday

Hey, chicas!

It’s everyone’s favorite day- Wednesday- the swapping of recipes and snack ideas! Horray! What have you been eating?

I liked this article about keeping on hand at home some quick, easy, and healthy high-energy snacks. http://triathlon.competitor.com/2010/01/nutrition/eat-healthy-at-home-even-with-a-hectic-schedule_6755

Therefore, you’re eliminating your excuse that you don’t have time to eat healthy, or that you don’t have “anything” to eat in your fridge. And although none of our names are as cool as Pip :) and although the article might seem like Dummy 101, there are still some good takeaways. I like the caution that just because something says it’s “all natural” does not mean it’s healthy or low-fat. And I like the tip to cook extras on the weekends and save individual portions in the fridge or freezer for the following week’s meals. Most of all, I like that she acknowledges that coming up with meal plans is just not her style and is just not going to happen, although she respects those whose style that is, but she just accepts herself and doesn’t beat herself up b/c she’s not that kind of person.

Everybody post your quickest, simplest recipes and snack ideas!!!

I discovered a weird and unusual snack yesterday that I loved, so I’ll share. I mixed in a little Tupperware container half an avocado and one cup of Bush’s seasoned black beans. That’s it. Weird, but I ate it with a spoon and it was yummy! The carbs in the beans and the fat in the avocado really helped me stay full longer. At 381 calories, it was a perfectly-sized mini-meal for me, with lots of energy. I’m sure adding tomatoes would make it more salsa-y and yummy, too.

Saturday night I made some shrimp skewers- super quick & simple. Just took a lb of frozen but pre-cooked, de-tailed, de-veined shrimp, thawed out, skewered about 8 on each wooden kebob skewer, brushed on a mixture of 2 T of bottled teriyaki sauce and 1 T of sesame oil. Broiled in the oven, top rack, 3 mins per side. Had steamed broccoli in the steamer going, too. For each serving of roughly 2 cups shrimp, 2 cups broccoli, and the tiny bit of sauce brushed on, about 275 calories. Again, a great mini-meal.

Sometime last week we had simple BBQ chicken- again very quick. Just took thawed boneless skinless chicken breasts, brushed honey BBQ sauce on each side, put on baking stone in oven, top rack to broil 10 mins, flip chicken, 10 more mins. Super juicy b/c it’s broiled (my fav way to cook chicken) and it’s cooked quickly. Served w/ steamed sugar snap peas. For each serving of roughly one chicken breast, 1 T of sauce, and 2 cups of steamed sugar snap peas, it’s about 500 calories.

Last night we had baked salmon- again, easy-peasy. Took some No Name original seasoned frozen salmon filets (built-in pop-up timer so you know when it’s cooked) and tossed in a covered pyrex dish in oven, 400 degrees for about 35 minutes. Served w/ steamed fresh asparagus. For each filet and 1.5 cups of asparagus, it’s about 300 calories.

Which you might be wondering w/ all the steamed veggies, I do like the microwaveable steam-in-the-bag type, but I adore my electric Black & Decker steamer that we got as an inexpensive little Target wedding registry gift, like $19 I think. It’s worked like a champ for 7 yrs strong! I recommend it :) We can cook rice in it, fresh veggies, frozen veggies, and I’m sure other stuff I haven’t tried in it. I really don’t like overcooked veggies, and this just cooks them perfectly- slightly crispy and beautifully steamed. There are instructions imprinted on the back of the steamer for lots of types of foods & veggies, telling you which water level to fill the steamer to, what herbs would go well with it, and how many minutes to set the steamer timer to.

Tonight we’re making chicken burritos- no rice, just lots of shredded iceberg, diced tomatoes, half a smashed avocado, lime juice, chicken w/ spices on it, and a whole wheat tortilla. Should be good!

Tuesday's Motivation

Good....er....afternoon, forgiving friends! :)

SLEEP CHECK:
First, a sleep check.  Have you ladies all been improving the # of hours of sleep you get each night since our last convo about sleep last week?  I'm stealing this sleep blurb from my amazing sis-in-law, Erianne:
"Everyone needs 7 to 10 hours sleep. Children (ages 1 – 10) require at least 10 hours, Adolescents (ages 11 – 22) need an average of 9.25 hours, and adults (23+ years) require 8.25 hours of sleep, on average, each night. Athletes in each age group have been shown to have a greater need for sleep than the nonathletes. For anyone, a sleep deficit is defined as the sum of all night s in which you sleep less than your sleep needs (» 8-10 hrs). The average American adolescent is operating at about a 25 hour deficit. At a 19 hour sleep deficit, athletes perform on cognitive and coordination tests, worst than someone with a .08 blood alcohol level. In the United States, a .08 blood alcohol level is considered legally drunk in 42 states.  Some of the reported effects of a sleep deficit are: impaired motor skills, impaired cognition, impaired memory, inhibited creativity, higher stress levels, increased body fat, depressed immune system, anxiety, impeded growth, irritability, depression, mood swings, decreased life expectancy, and difficulty maintaining interpersonal relationships. Athletes who want to perform at their peak must outline and follow a proper sleep regime.  Another study just performed at Stanford on their swim team demonstrated that extra sleep (1 hour beyond normal sleep patterns), significantly enhanced the swimmers performance! Kind of cool.
Here is a link to a good article with some helpful hints and facts about sleep and athletic performance: topspeedschool.com/uploads/TopSpeed-Sleep.pdf "
So that's you! You're an athlete I'd say if you workout daily or try to.  So you need MORE sleep than others!  Can you put a high priority on sleep?  You're drunk if you don't! :)  That's a fun light to put the issue in. So, after that cool sleep check from Erianne, on to today's info.

DECIDING ON A GOAL WEIGHT:
Leslie, to answer your question posed yesterday about the proper goal weight, there are oodles of BMI calculators and what not online.  I do agree that a given BMI number IS a huge weight range, though.  I've never asked a physician what my healthy weight was, or used a calculator other than my Wii Fit to tell me what my goal BMI was, but I'm sure those would all be good ideas.  I took the weight I was when I graduated high school and subtracted 10 lbs.  I figured that'd be a good goal weight, but that I'd probably adjust to see how it was when I got there.  It just so happens that right around that goal weight was my arbitrarily set 50 lb total weight loss goal.  I wanted to get to a round # (dumb, I know, totally not scientific or biologically genius).  And then the biggest thing for determining my goal weight was a weight loss success story I read last summer in a magazine where the woman was 2 inches taller than me and at that goal weight, and I liked the body type (not all muscular and ripped, just trim and athletic) and the body type corresponded with my own (pretty straight up & down, I've never been hourglass-shaped).  So I've determined, though, that my goal weight is a "decade" range on the scale.  Just in a range of 10 lbs.  If I stay between x lbs and x lbs I'll be happy.  It seems I can't really lose more unless I want to lose muscle and I am not about to do that and sacrifice my athletic ability, so I'm happy where I am, which is about 5 lbs more than what I had originally thought would be my goal weight, but my body seems happy where it's at, stable.  Like I said yesterday, I'm just working on being a little less gooey in a few areas and a little more solid now :)   What tips do you guys have?  How did you decide on your goal weight?

BEATING THE WEEKEND BINGES:
Leah & Jeanie, we all have a hard time on the weekends because it's just not in our routine.  What's helped me is my hubby getting in on the healthy-eating bandwagon.  If he wasn't, I know for sure I'd be a big sucker for whatever decadent or greasy foods he wanted to splurge on.  So Shanda, I definitely say get Mara on the bandwagon!  Have her join our group!  She's such a sweetheart- I know she'd love it.  Then problem solved with the healthy grocery shopping.  If she doesn't want to hop on, then I'd suggest flip flopping your arrangement.  Have her do the utilities and you do the groceries.  Or if not that, then put your heads together and plan a meal plan for the week that works for you both, and have her go shopping for it.  Or do separate meal plans and give her your healthy meal-plan-for-one (lots of little snacks you can have separate from everyone) to go shopping for.  So back to the weekends in particular, one thing you can do to counteract the heavy eating is to put in a heavy workout.  Usually we have an extra chunk of time to workout on a weekend than we do during the work week.  For instance, I like to do my longer runs on Saturdays, because it's the only day of the week I have enough daylight to go do that.  So my Saturday calorie burns are higher than any other day of the week, so if I eat more, it's ok.  Another idea is to try your hardest to maintain your routine throughout the weekend, like getting up at the same time, eating at the same time, working out at the same time, going to bed at the same time, etc.  If it's a matter of an extra 8 hours spent at home wearing a trail in the carpeting from the couch to the fridge because you're bored, plan a typical work-day long excursion from the house, either shopping or running errands, working out, or some other adventure.  This will help keep your body on schedule for what it's used to being away from the house at work during the week.  This article from Shape on the subject of avoiding binge eating says to keep up on your food diary (counting what you eat in MFP), explore food-free ways of socializing (like our active non-restaurant date night side challenge), bring your own low-cal healthy treat to a get together so you know you can eat at least one thing instead of being victim to whatever everyone else provided.  What tips do you have?  How do you keep from falling off the healthy-eating and working out bandwagon on the weekends?

Share, share, share :) Let's all help each other!

Feel Good Friday

GOOOOOOOD MORNING, girls :)  Horray, it's Friday!!!  I couldn't be happier!!!

So remember the first side challenge during this 6 week Ten in Six challenge that was to plan an active date?  Well of all the participants, I drew Jen's name and here's the Polar water bottle she won that I'll be giving to her tonight.  BPA-free & Phthalate-free in case you were wondering :)  My hubby loves these for summer bike rides b/c it keeps the water cold in the hot sun.  I know Amy uses them, too.  But the gift receipt is inside the bottle.... haha  Horray, Jen!  Can't wait to hear how all that dancing goes!

The second side challenge is kind of a big one, but it's one that I am REALLY REALLY REALLY EXCITED about!  It will last not just today through next Friday, but today through the end of the challenge (3 more weeks!).  It's been something I've been meaning to do for a long time, since all my recipes are loose-leaf computer printouts smeared with food in a huge stack on my counter AND in my cupboard.....with hodge podge books & what not interspersed of course....

2nd Side Challenge: Half the battle (or more than half the battle for me) in making a healthy meal plan and grocery shopping list for the coming week lies in REMEMBERING yummy, healthy meal ideas or lies in FORGETTING the cheesy, fatty, greasy meals I grew up eating. Wouldn't it make eating healthy easier if we had a quick collection w/ nutritional facts at our fingertips in the kitchen? This side challenge is something I've had on my to-do list for almost a year now! For this side-challenge, make a small healthy recipe album of your favorite recipes (include kid-friendly recipes, too!). You could do a small online collection, add in pictures of the foods & the nutritional facts per serving. You could print it out or keep it in digital form. Could be a word document or an elaborate online scrapbooking album. You could get all crafty with decorative 4x6" paper cardstock cards inserted into a photo album to keep on the kitchen counter. Or you could simply write out healthy meal ideas on 4x6" cards and put it in a small album to keep on your counter. The # of recipes you do is all up to you. If you want to do just dinner ideas, go for it. If you want to include breakast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and snack ideas, more power to you. If you want to have a section of just quick kids lunch box components, awesome. You could use a card file box instead of an album if you want. Do whatever you want to do. You could even just have a long Word document on your computer- keep it all digital.  Or put all your existing unhealthy recipes out of sight and just leave your healthy recipes in your already organized kitchen.  Have a favorite unhealthy meal at a local restaurant? Then re-do it at home, making your own healthy substitutions and voila- an edited recipe! Make sure you have the serving size listed on it and all the nutritional data like calories, fat, protein, fiber, etc. (You can analyze a recipe in MFP by going to a blank day in the future, entering in all the ingredients for the dish, then dividing out the total # of calories by the # of servings, dividing fat, protein, etc.) Take a picture or two of your finished album product and email it to me. I'll post them all when I get them. Use your creativity and make it completely your own!

I picked up a 3 ring binder from a scrapbooking store last night w/ the 12" x 12" blank clear pages inside that is meant to hold 4x6 photos in different collage arrangements.  I am so EXCITED!  The binder is shiny buttercup faux leather so it will wipe clean easily from all my food splashes (hmmm....maybe I'm a sloppy chef) and protect my recipe cards.  I want to put just healthy stuff in it, and of course it will grow and expand over the years, then maybe a sealed off top secret opaque envelope at the back for all the sinful family recipes I don't want to lose track of, but shouldn't be looking at when I'm flipping through the book planning meals :)  I can't wait to start it this weekend!

Feel the Burn Thursday

Good morning, slimming divas!
What workouts have you done this week (be specific so we can all get good fresh ideas)????
If you're bored with your workout, try Googling some new moves, taking a class at the gym you've never tried, or borrowing a workout DVD from a friend who's tired of it.  Here's the workout page from Prevention with some good strength training ideas, since we talked about that a lot before this session.  There are even a couple of free iPod download workouts!

Whatcha Eatin' Wednesday

Good late morning, lovely ladies!  It's been quiet lately on the blog.... What have you ladies been eating? Share your snack ideas and yummy meal recipes!

Kim, to answer your question from last week about what proportions to eat of what types of foods, etc, I would say your nutritionist would know what’s best and that it sounds pretty good. I’m no expert in that area, and I’m always trying to learn more and improve. That's an area I need to read some books on!  The guidelines I go off of don’t take a lot of thinking power luckily and are pretty laid back- 6 mini-meals a day instead of 3 huge meals, keeping my foods high protein, medium to low carbohydrate, and pack in as many raw foods like fruits and veggies as possible. When I have breads or pastas I make sure it’s multi-grain. I also have been trying since this post (about a fantastic Runner’s World Diet article that I can’t find any more on their site) to have the high-energy carbs of my day clustered around my workout afternoons/evenings and have my feel-full-longer fat/fiber of my day clustered around my mornings/mid-day when I’m not active. I have a lot of room for improvement in that department, though, because I don’t put enough thought into when I eat my healthy snacks, I just eat them when I want them, listening to my body.

It’s so amazing that raw foods out there were created for our every need! Here are some workout-friendly must-haves that I love:

Berries fight inflammation (relieving muscle and joint soreness post-workout)

Avocados have healthy fat to prevent muscle & joint injury, Bananas keep us from cramping up and give us energy to work out, and Chocolate Milk helps our muscles to recover post-workout

This & this & this all about how Tart Cherry Juice fights inflammation, too

I am really intrigued by the Cherry Juice. Have any of you tried it? I haven’t and I wonder if it’s yummy. I’m thinking about picking up a jug at the grocery store soon to give the experiment a shot!

Share your snack ideas and yummy meal recipes!

Tuesday Motivation

“Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds. Discard them and their value will never be known. Improve them and they will become the brightest gems in a useful life.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Time is the most valuable coin in your life. You and you alone determine how that coin will be spent. Be careful that you do not let other people spend it for you.”
-Carl Sandburg

How do you spend those precious spare moments in your day? Workouts don’t need to be a full hour blocked off on your schedule where you zone the rest of the world out- they can be quick little bursts throughout the day. Check out the workout page of Fitness Magazine’s site: http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/workout/. There are links to all kinds of 15 minute exercises: 15 minute butt, 15 minute arms, 15 minute cardio, 15 minute jump roping, etc. Honestly, who CARES if you’re a little out of breath and glistening when you run your next errand- you’re going to feel really proud of yourself, and your body is going to be slimming, so who cares what other people think!

If 15 minutes is too big of a chunk of time, try little things like sitting on an exercise ball while at the computer instead of on an office chair- tiny little flexes on your core will make a difference over time. Try doing plies (like Marianne) or squats while you’re brushing your teeth in the bathroom in the morning or while you’re in the shower shampooing your hair.

Park your car at the back of the parking lot and hike in. Not only will you not feel that anxious must-find-front-row-spot feeling, but you’ll be proud of yourself for the extra 50-100 steps you’re taking!

Cleaning the house, go ahead and do multiple trips up and down the stairs at a fast pace, rather than making a pile at the bottom of the stairs of stuff that needs to be taken upstairs and then taking it up only when it gets to be a massive load. Find a project that you need to do at home, like re-organizing cupboards above your head in the kitchen, or lifting and rearranging storage in the basement or garage- your arms and shoulders will love you.

Play with your kids; do airplane, horsey rides, tickling, rolling around and laughing, somersaults, cartwheels, jumping rope, hula hoop, etc. You’re doing double duty workouts & quality fun time with the kiddos.

In warmer weather, keep a jogger stroller or a wagon in the back of the car. If you’re waiting 10 minutes for picking someone up or while you’re running errands, take the littler kiddos for a walk or a wagon-pull around the school grounds. Be spontaneous and say “yes” when your kids see a fun new park or playground they’ve never stopped at and climb on the jungle gym with them for 5 minutes!

Just a little bit of exercise will ENERGIZE you for MORE exercise! Add up 5 minutes here, 2 minutes there, and you might be surprised by the end of the day how much of a workout you got in!

What other ideas do you have for squeezing in little workouts in your busy schedule?

Monday Morning Check-In

Happy Birthday, Nicki!

How did your 2nd week go?  Let us know how much you're up or how much you're down this week.  What's your game plan for this coming week- anything you're going to do differently or anything new you're going to commit to that you want the group here to hold you accountable to?

Remember, according to the instructions in the link on the left side bar for how to accurately weigh and measure yourself, don't even get on the scale if it's your week of the month, b/c it will make you cry and it's just retained water.  If it's your week, just keep working hard on eating right and working out and you'll see two weeks worth of numbers on the scale the following week.  Keep your head up!

1/24/10

Happy Birthday, Ashley!

It's a big week w/ 3 Ten in Six birthday gals :)  Happy Happy Birthday, Ashley!!!!

Weigh in tomorrow morning (no measuremets yet) :)
