- Are you drinking enough water? You could aim for the old addage of 8 glasses of 8 ounces of water. Something I prefer b/c it's more realistic for a water-liking-challenged person like me is this fun calculator that takes into effect your gender & body size: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-242-302--5382-0,00.html
- Are you eating enough? You shouldn't ever get to the ravenously starving stage. Eat something light every few hours. Your metabolism will keep revving along steadily and you'll feel more fulfilled. Have you tried mini-meals or smaller meals w/ more snacks? Make sure you're eating those calories you're burning, too, to stay at your net caloric goal and keep your energy up. If you're at a net calorie for the day LOWER than what MFP says you should be at, you might start feeling low-energy, really fatigued, and your body could go into "starvation mode" meaning it won't burn much and it will store everything you eat instead of burning it for fuel b/c it senses it has no idea when or if its next meal will come. All bad stuff, right?! So make sure you're eating ENOUGH! :)
- Are you getting enough sleep? Being sleep deprived really affects not just your ability to work out, but also your metabolism and mood. Adults should aim for 8 hours a night if possible (and if not possible, then all you can do is the best you can and that's awesome). Athletes should aim for 10 hours a night. WHOA! So depending on how incredible you're doing at your workouts this challenge, you might want to increase your sleep habits a little bit so you don't start draggin' and feeling burnt out.
Whether it’s the Summer or Winter Olympics, I love them. I have thought about this a great deal and have come to the conclusion that it’s not just my Greek heritage that makes me feel this way. In fact, while I am very proud of it, I know that it’s not about heritage, but instead, the significant statement that the Olympic Games make. The first Olympiad was held in 776BC and was held initially as a religious festival to honor the supreme god of gods, Zeus. The games lasted for 1170 years until 393 AD when they were abolished by the Christian Roman Emperor Theodosius.
The Greeks loved the Olympics because they put great emphasis on fitness and athletics and its importance to a good mind. Because being an Olympic Champion was so significant, the athletes competed for honor, not material goods. A simple wreath made from a sacred olive tree was the symbol of their accomplishment. After an absence of 1500 years the Olympics were brought back by a Frenchmen who shared the thinking that a strong body was important for a strong mind. Thus Baron Pierre de Coubertin is credited with bringing back the Olympics as International Games in 1896. I am personally grateful he did this for the world.
So as I thought about the games this week, I couldn’t help but think of the lessons that they teach, if we are willing to look below the hype and the competition itself. For while we have only three medals, Bronze, Silver and Gold; each and every one of these athletes are champions. They are champions for what it has taken for them to make it to Vancouver this winter. So today I would like to make some comparisons to what it takes to be an Olympic athlete and what it takes for you to win your greatest personal victory. And that victory is, as Aristotle told us 2300 years ago when he said this,” the greatest of victories is the victory over Self”. Imagine 2300 years ago and Greeks were writing self help books! :)
So here is how I will summarize my thoughts on your personal greatness and the Olympic champions.
The Five P’s
Preparation,
Perseverance,
Patience,
Persistence
Performance
First think about the preparation that it takes for an Olympian to make it to the Games? The hours and hours of training, practice and disappointment, all with nothing more than the dream of a medal. When, I wonder, does someone see the possibility that they can qualify for the Olympics? When do they finally believe in themselves enough to begin the arduous task of working toward that dream?
So the first P, Preparation, is about creating a dream, believing in yourself more than anyone else probably does and then taking the steps to get there. This will include a good coach and a commitment to excellence. You too, need a dream and like the Olympians of the Ancient games, you need to do it for honor, not material things. Honor, to me, is doing the right things for your family, religious beliefs and community.
The second P, Perseverance, is what it takes to get from the dream to the reality of just how hard this is going to be. How many kids talk about being a Navy Seal, a Doctor, and Astronaut, only to abandon their dream at the first sign of hard work? Do you think an Olympian ever has days when things didn’t go well? Do you think they ever consider quitting? My guess, everyone of them will tell you they thought of quitting numerous times. Do you think about quitting your dream? Do you play hurt like so many Olympians, or do you call in sick with a sniffle?
The third P, Patience is about your staying power. It’s about endurance and your ability to allow skills to catch up with dreams. Being realistic about the time it will take to make it to the top. The great athletes of the Olympics know this well. How many did we hear about this week, who had to wait four more years for their next chance? How many had a bad break, an injury, a fall and still came back, four years later? The dream never dies!
The fourth P, Persistence is what all champions have. My mentor, Don Clifton always said a winner “increases his/her persistence in the face of resistance.” Your ability to persist is a skill, not just a feeling. No one achieves without persistence.
The fifth P, Performance is what we have after we have done all the rest. Our performance is simply the culmination of our preparation, perseverance, patience and persistence. This is the payoff for the practice, the hours and hours of practice. Is your practice in alignment with your desired level of achievement? If you were in front of the judges for the Olympics of Life, how would they rate your performance?
So as we watch the Olympics come to a close this weekend, don’t let the memory of great achievement fade. Don’t let the emotion you felt as you watched an Olympic performance leave you. Decide now that you too can win the greatest victory of all, victory over Self!
So why do I love the Olympics? I love the Olympics because it is the greatest manifestation of Human ability. It’s about ordinary people, doing extraordinary things. Remember, anything you ardently desire and earnestly work toward will eventually come to pass.

And WELCOME to Cadie & Michelle K, who are new today!
ReplyDeleteI know I use to say this all the time, but what helps me drink the water is a fun cup or bottle. It makes drinking water pretty! Also, I hate the taste of water (yes, water has a taste, and its gross) so I've found a straw does wonders, less time on the taste buds. And I can sit, type & sip!
ReplyDeleteI also have to mention real quick, the sleep thing? Yeah, it just makes me laugh right now (newborn in the house!)
The Olympic stuff really got me motivate today! My 3 yr old has been awful today and I just wanted to stuff it and eat bon bons all day, but reading that made me get up and exercise, and that today is my victory. :)
I got a nice water bottle for Christmas for myself for my stocking. It is more fun to drink out of that instead of dirty old plastic bottles. Plus I can wash and reuse (so I can do a little to be green) I keep it on my window sill above my kitchen sink... where I am frequently during the day. It helps.
ReplyDeleteAlso, one of my goals for this challenge IS to get enough sleep. I went to bed at 9:15 last night and I was amazed at how awake I was when I woke up! I am a usual 11-12 bedtime nightowl, but that posed a problem of eating snacks late, so I want to change my bedtime.
And, anything with the Olympics motivates me... I always said I wanted to be a figure skater... they make it look so easy! haha!
Day two and I feel I'm doing good! twice to the gym.. and no JUNK FOOD! yeah me!
Welcome again all of you new ladies! I loved all of your thoughts Sarah! You have a great way of stating everything so clearly. :) What stands out to me the most today is what Aristotle said "The greatest of victories is the victory over SELF!" So true! It's us we're doing this for and only us that can make it really happen! That's why it feels so good to succeed, because we know all too well how incredibly hard it was. What a great feeling though when you DO IT hu?! Have a great finish to your day!
ReplyDeleteI actually like the taste of water. Especially when it's at the right temperature.
ReplyDeleteRe: the first full day. I was doing so good until I watched the Bachelor. And then I was so bummed out that I had to eat some cookies to cheer myself up. Jake is lame. What a depressing night.
Anyway. I liked the thoughts about the Olympics. As I watched them these last two weeks, I thought about how terrible the weather conditions were for all of the skiers and the snowboarders. And I felt bad for them having to compete in less than ideal conditions, but still knowing that an Olympic medal was at stake, even in an imperfect setting. But that's just part of being an athlete. You have to be stellar in all situations, if you are going to be the best. That's what makes you the best.
Forgive me for the analogy, but the same is true for us. There will probably never be an ideal time in our lives to make healthy food choices or to exercise. We will probably always want for more time in the day to exercise or more money to buy "healthy" foods. But we just need to start being healthy. We just need to do it. Small choices here and there. And if it really is a lifestyle change that we want, it will become part of us. Seize the day, ladies. We can do it!
Phew-- that's the end of my deep thoughts.
I love cold water. Sadly I also love soda. And unfortunately I tend to crave soda more. So what I did was instead of buying regular I bought diet (which I REALLY dont like) But the funny thing is is that if my craving for soda is THAT intense, I'll drink diet and have no problem with it. Otherwise if the craving isn't that intense I totally drink water instead. It is kinda a copout in some ways I think but I think it is better motivation to drink water for me.
ReplyDeleteAND my super duper exciting thing for today.....
I bought new pants.
And not only did I buy new pants (I have worn a size 12 for the last 4 years (I use to wear size 8)) But those pants are a size 10.....
And they fit. And they look FABULOUS! Now my goal is to make those too big and finish getting rid of my belly. Tonight I am off to dance class with my wonderful guy and I plan on pushing myself to the max since it is Tango night.
I love the process of the first 4 p's from the article. I get the greatest amount of motivation from the constancy and forward progress. The "preformance" p actually causes me a little anxiety.
ReplyDeleteI need to remember this more often when I get discouraged or find myself stuck. I can apply this in every area of my life, not just with exercise and weight loss.
Day 1 went well. If feels good to back in focus, or perseverance as the case may be.
Hope everyone is having a great first week!
i wasn't a fan of water either. i did get myself a pretty waterbottle. i drink the first waterbottle full of just water with benefiber and then the second waterbottle full i've been using the crystal light to go flavors. it's only 5 calories per pouch. i figure i could splurge to be able to get all of my water intake done. i, too liked seeing the 4 p's. the one i have the most trouble with is the patience of course that is just life in general and the patience battle. i have to keep telling myself slow and steady. it doesn't always work but i have my loving husband to help remind me when i can't do it myself.
ReplyDeleteWait, Amy, you mean Santa doesn't fill your stocking for you???!!!! jk :) A cute water bottle really does help. Leslie- I love your thoughts and analogy- no need to ask for forgiveness- that's awesome. Did you guys see that speed skater's slashed leg scar on the BL from a speed skating accident and then he was competing in the olympics like 6 mo or less later? We don't have any reason for not challenging our own excuses. Shanda- shake that cute little booty in those new pants! Yay yay yay! Clothes make me giddy, but honestly, I swear I'm not the girly ditzy type, so that's really weird.... :) Amy C, I agree- the performance of life one is a little intimidating, but the rest of it's good. My fav was the first P about dreaming and deciding to commit. Allison- I agree, Crystal Light lemonade feels like a yummy splurge to me. I enjoy a big glass of it w/ dinner many nights :) Carla, I unfortunately have no experience w/ good at home treadmills.... sorry! Does anyone else have one? I was scoping them out on Craig's List last fall but then was pretty overwhelmed by the five zillion options and Googling the comparative reports. I guess some have pretty weak motors and aren't for running even- just for walking- which strikes me as odd for a treadmill. So I guess Tim-the-Toolman-Taylor it up and get one w/ lots of power! There are a lot of sites out there that compare treadmills & people post reviews on them. The fitness center in my office complex where I run on the treadmills has Precor and Landice, and they both work great, but they might be commercial grade ones meant for overuse in gyms and might be pricier than other kinds. Some even have built in fans that blow on you :)
ReplyDeleteWOW!!! I loved this article! This Harry guy was truly inspired to write this and it definitely applies to all of us. Of the 5 P's he mentioned, I think the area that I struggle with most is preparation. I find that if I am prepared and write out a menu for the week, grocery shop, record everything I eat, and have a plan for the exercise I will be doing for that week I do so much better and I am more likely to follow through with the goals I have set for myself but if I don't plan ahead, my eating is terrible, I start making excuses, I don't get to bed at a decent hour and then it's too easy to stay in bed and sleep in because I didn't get enough sleep and on an on. So that is something that I am going to really focus on is being more prepared!
ReplyDeleteI love the Olympics too and the one thing that really struck me while watching the United States Men's Hockey Team receive their silver medals, is that they all looked so gloomy. I know they wanted to win the gold, we all wanted it for them, but I wanted to jump through the TV and say, "Stand tall and hold your head up high and be proud that you made it to this point in your life regardless of the medal, you're a winner!" And that's how I like to look at my journey of living a healthy lifestyle, we are all winners! Celebrate all the victories in your life whether they be big or small. Pat yourself on the back for not eating that piece of cake or for exercising an extra 15 minutes whatever those triumphs are in your life, celebrate and be proud of yourself! My daughter offered me some candy today and I turned it down and instead went and grabbed a handful of grapes! It's a baby step but I am proud of myself! :)
