Feel the Burn Thursday

Good morning, girls!
I hope you're having a great day :)

Let us know what great workouts you've been up to!

Mini Me, I've been researching the hot summer runs a bit more.  Here's an article on Runner's World about it.  I guess the foods you eat the night before a long summer run can affect you?  "The night before summer long runs, he sticks with salads and fruits, which are not only light but also have a high water content to assist with hydration."  They also suggest running waaaay early in the morning to beat  the heat.  And also to let your body set your pace- not pushing yourself.  "In other words, when it's hot, slow down. "If it ain't happening, it ain't happening," says Dunaway. "What we say here is 'Don't be a hero in the heat.'"  Also, your body stresses when it's running in the heat, especially if you're in air conditioning the rest of the day.  The article suggests exposing yourself to heat in increments throughout the whole day so you adjust to the heat.  "Gradually exposing yourself to the hot weather--for as little as 30 minutes a day--helps induce changes that make the body more tolerant of heat stress."

This other article from the same site suggests pairing a run w/ a swim.  Like run to the pool, swim, and run back.  It will help bring down your body temperature.

Take care of yourselves, ladies!!!

  1. I've just recently been cleared by my sports med. doc to run the Half I signed up for in Sept. I've been having knee issues and I've learned that it is not as serious as it could be. So, yeah! -I can run!!

As I'm running my first 4 mile run in a while this morning I'm thinking, "Oh Yipee, I can run again.(huff! puff!) Why am I excited about this??" It's amazing how when I couldn't train, I was so bummed. Now that I can, hmm. :)

But, I buckled down and finished my four miles. It helped to remember how I felt when the option of running was taken away.

FYI for those of you who run: I've learned that it's VERY important to strength train the rest of your body to help protect the bits that we're so hard on while running. Strengthening core muscles, quads, glutes, calves, etc. helps to prevent overuse injuries.

  2. Thanks for looking into this for me. I greatly appreciate it. I haven't looked at the articles yet but am really interested to see them when I have a few extra minutes tonight after the kids are asleep. I am going for a shorter long run on Saturday and will be taking some Gatorade zero with me to see if it is an electrolyte thing.

I am toying around with my strength training by adding more weight then doing less reps in a set. My body has kinda plateaued and I am trying to see if I can awaken it to more possibilities. I have also been playing sand volleyball I LOVE IT!!! I am using leg, arm, and definitely core muscles that haven't been worked in awhile.

What is everyone else up to lately??
